VERY IMPORTANT- Chrome update in January 2018 will show your site as un-secure unless you have an SSL Certificate installed.

Visit your site in your browser. Look out for the little lock symbol at the top left hand side of your search bar. If you are using Chrome as your browser, it will display the below:

What happens if I don’t get an SSL for my website?
Chrome 56, which is slated to launch in January 2018, will mark HTTP login pages as “not secure” in a window next to the address bar. Unencrypted HTTP is extremely dangerous for login pages, as it could allow an attacker to intercept passwords as they travel across the network, whereas if one were to do it over a secure network with SSL (HTTPS), it would be a lot more difficult to do so.

The Technical Jargon
An SSL certificate is defined by this site as: SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser (So between you and the website). This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral.

The site goes on to add: To be able to create an SSL connection a web server requires an SSL Certificate. When you choose to activate SSL on your web server you will be prompted to complete a number of questions about the identity of your website and your company. Your web server then creates two cryptographic keys – a Private Key and a Public Key.

Why is Google pushing for your site to have an SSL Certificate?

“Chrome currently indicates HTTP connections with a neutral indicator,” writes Emily Schechter of the Chrome Security team. “This doesn’t reflect the true lack of security for HTTP connections. When you load a website over HTTP, someone else on the network can look at or modify the site before it gets to you.” This is commonly known as an injection attack, wherein someone seamlessly injects malware into unencrypted web traffic.

SSL Certificates increase your Search Engine Search Results listings

It’s only a little boost but every little helps when it comes to marketing. Google has confirmed their search results algorithm has a positive factor associated with SSL Certificates. They’ve also publicly stated “we may decide to strengthen” the signal because they want to “encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe on the web.”
