WordPress. One of the oldest content management systems (CMS) available on the market today. Starting out as a free to use platform, WordPress has now evolved to support enterprises and their large-scale operations. WordPress’ clean and easy to use platform has made life very easy for not just these large scale enterprises, but for just about any other person who wishes to create content on the web. With a simple click of a button, a post can be published on a gorgeous layout. Here we will list the top 11 Australian sites that use WordPress.
1. CSIRO Blog
CSIRO stands for “Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.” It’s a large research company and Australia’s largest patent holder. They get up to 40k visitors a month and are currently running on the Genesis theme with Genesis-specific plugins like Jetpack, Jetpack for WooCommerce and Yoast SEO.
2. Herald Sun
The Herald Sun news portal apparently runs on WordPress VIP, which means we can’t see much of the theme and the plugins – both remain unknowns. What we do know is that they run on WordPress and so fits our list. They have about 2.2 million visitors every month, which is a solid number.
3. News.com.au
Australia’s largest news site also seems to be running on WordPress VIP and as such, we cannot peer into the inner workings of theme and its plugins. They get an average of 10 million visitors per month, with a 30.5% increase from month to month in the last year.
4. FoxSports
Australia’s largest sports news site, much like the Herald Sun and News.com.au seems to be running on WordPress VIP and as such, we cannot peer into the inner workings of theme and its plugins. They get an average of 2 million visitors per month, with a 3.4% increase from month to month in the last year, though there is an odd drop in visitors in March of this year.
5. Optus Blog
Optus, Australia’s second largest communications company also runs on WordPress. This is confirmed by the person who built Optus’ blog site as well as its main and media sites. However, we don’t know what theme and plugins it is using. Optus’ blog gets about 2 million visitors a month.
6. The Australian
Covering a wide range of topics, The Australian also runs on WordPress VIP and brings in an average of 2.1 million visitors a month. If you happen to discover their 404 Error page, you’re in for a good laugh.
7. Daily Telegraph
Like its UK based counterpart, this Sydney-based tabloid paper also runs on WordPress VIP (patterns, patterns) and rakes in about 1.8 million visitors to its site every month.
8. KidSpot
Covers a lot on children and parenting and seems to be running on the theme and uses the following plugins. They get around 800k visitors in a month on average but exact statistics are not available.
9. Craftbits
Is a do-it-yourself craft website run by a mother and daughter team, has been around since 1999 and is located in Brisbane, Australia. The site provides anything from knitting and crochet patterns to jewelry making tips and self-made gifts for all holidays and occasions and draw between 70,000 and 100,000 visitors. Craftbits also runs the Genesis theme and its plugins include Lazy Load, Jetpack for WooCommerce, WYSIJA Newsletters (MailPoet) and Google Sitemap Generator.
10. SitePoint
Writes about web design, programming languages, WordPress, SEO, and more. The site also offers courses and ebooks which draw in around 10 million and more visitors. The site uses their own custom theme, which means details remain unknown. However, we know that they use Yoast SEO, Akismet and W3 Total Cache among others.
11. Digital Photography School
DPS is one of the projects of Darren Rowse, the founder of mega blogging site, Problogger. The blog contains almost 7,000 posts and traffic estimates are around 1.7 million visitors per month. It seems to be running a child theme of an unknown parent. Plugins that this site uses includes Yoast SEO, Jetpack, Akismet, Sucuri Security, User Role Editor, W3 Total Cache, Yet Another Related Posts Plugin, and Thrive Visual Editor.
